Please note the following:
- The reduction of homocysteine is dose related.
- Folic Acid has the major therapeutic effect but is more effective in combination with B6, B12 and Betaine.
- Adequate B12 needs to be provided to reduce the risk of masking pernicious anemia and as a methyl-donor.
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) reduces homocysteine by an independent mechanism and is dose dependent.
- Betaine is essential as a methyl donor in converting homocysteine to methionine. In combination with Folic Acid, B6 and B12 Betaine appears to enhance their effectiveness.
- Aspirin is added to decrease C-Reactive Protein and inhibit thromboxan.
Products marketed directly to patients contain:
- Choline, even in large doses, probably has no effect on serum homocysteine levels.
- Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is added in a large enough dose to change the patient’s urine to bright yellow – making the patient believe that the product is "really working".
